Travelling with a baby.

We are back from Penang!
Nadya survived her plane ride. Yes i must mention that because that was my biggest fear. That she’ll end up with airplane ears. To be honest, i hate flying cos i get airplane ears all the time, and that is why i’m not a stewardess (apart from being too short & fat, of course. HAHAHAHA)

So yes i know how painful airplanes ears are and was pretty scared if Nadya kena also. It’ll be so kesian cos the other infants in our flight were crying bloody murder.. But i read up and found tips on how to get baby to survive airplane rides and i’m gonna share how i did it.

  1. For the flight out to Penang, we took an evening flight. Mainly cos we didn’t want to rush to the airport and all. It was afterall our first flight with a baby. Our flight was at 5.30pm. Nadya usually takes her nap by then.
  2. I gave her milk at 2.00pm and cross fingers she would want to drink again by the time we takeoff. She did and she was drinking milk during the plane takeoff. I also made sure we change her diapers before we enter the boarding area.
  3. Once she’s done drinking, i pop the pacifier in her mouth so she’ll continue that sucking reflex.
  4. I babywear her when the plane was cruising and continued doing so till the plane touched down.

Voila! She didn’t cry at all. So i’m guessing those tips worked. I also think that the plane engine noise was kinda comforting to her cos it’s white noise. She slept thru’ it. Amazing.

Now, packing for a baby was another story. I knew it would be tricky. I didn’t wanna overpack but i also didn’t wanna miss out anything and then get flustered over it. So i do up a travel packing list (which i’ll share later!), print it and tick it off one by one, making sure i did not leave anything out.

Previously, me & Rusly only need to bring a cabin luggage to fit both our clothes for a 4D3N trip. Now, we had to use the largest sized one and because we are now packing for three and she have her toiletries and all, i got myself a luggage organizer from Qoo10 and it was helpful! It helped us to sort out our stuff and we didn’t have to rummage thru’ the entire luggage for our stuff.

IMG_9095

So neat & tidy and we were able to separate her toiletries and ours etc and only took out whatever’s necessary.

IMG_9096

What we brought for our trip. I babywear most of the time when we are on the streets and then when we sit down & eat, i put her in the stroller.
Luckily she loves being worn AND lying down in her stroller.
(Cos after what i’ve spent on that stroller, kalau dia tak nak duduk, memang aku deduct dari duit sekolah dia nanti! LOL)

Apart from those two things, it was pretty easy bringing an infant on a plane. I feel if you know their routine well and what you can do to appease them when they’re cranky, you’ll survive!

IMG_9359

For this trip, we brought her favourite rattle, Katie.
Yes, i named all her toys like a freak mom would do. I’ll introduce all her friends toys to you guys in another post. #crazymomalert

We really enjoyed the trip and our Penang Trip will be in another post ok!

Just keep swimming!

Two weeks ago, Nadya had her first swimming experience!
Rusly had to go Desaru for a company trip and it was a bit leceh if i wanna tag along and all and i think Desaru is boring so i didn’t bother. Lol

So i took the opportunity to sleep over at my parent’s place! It’s been so long since i’ve slept over and also cos my nieces & nephew is sleeping over as well, so we had a cousin sleepover for Nadya. Not that dia paham apa2 pon. She was just happy with all the attention they gave her. Suka lah dia banyak orang layankan dia.

We also took that opportunity to bring all the kids for swimming! Including Nadya! Actually mak dia tau yang sibuk nak swimming. But really i just want Nadya to get used to the pool cos she’ll be starting her swimming classes next week! It’ll officially commence this Saturday but we’ll be in Penang so we had to skip a class. Kesian anak aku, kecik2 mak dia dah ajar skip class semua. tsk.

We bought her swimsuit from the Baby Fair. Got it at $55.00 instead of $70.90 here. Initially wanted her to wear those really cute and skimpy swimwear tapi macam kesian pulak. Dah lah siang2 kena belajar swimming, celup dalam air semua. So i figured just invest in a good one for her swimming classes since she’s gonna spend 30mins per class!

And i didn’t regret one bit of buying her that swimming suit. Even though material dia step macam nak gi diving. Cos after all those swimming, and i went to the shower room to rinse her, i noticed that her body wasn’t wet from all that swimming! So technically she was really ‘protected’ from the cold water. Well, except for her legs ah. No wonder she didn’t cry that much when i submerged her body in the water. Lol

Sunday swimming! #NadyaRaessa #12weeks

A post shared by Dyan Razali (@deardyan) on

a short insta-video cos the other videos i took were so noisy! Blame it on my nieces! Macam mak-neneks!

Nadya swimming classes will be conducted by Smile Swimmers. Got a positive feedback from one of my friend who sent her baby for the classes so now i’m excited to get Nadya started. I’m no tiger mummy, in case you think i’m so kiasu to be sending Nadya for classes when she’s not even a year old! I just think that swimming is a life skill that we would benefit from and it helps with baby’s motor skills and water confidence. Doesn’t help that both mummy & daddy are fond of swimming and will carik chance to swim anytime. So yes, our child need to know how to swim. Apart from that, i also want Nadya to be exposed to people at a young age, preferably people her own age and not some cheekopek lah kan. I just think that social skills starts from young. At least that’s what my parents said lah.

Cos my mom said they brought me out jalan2 ALL the time even before her pantang ended. So i grew up being quite receptive of people and i hope Nadya will turn out to be the same. InshaAllah.

IVF Journey

The IVF Timeline

For those interested to know how long the IVF process went on for me, here’s the timeline for your reference. I’ve received a couple of emails on this, mainly from our Muslim sisters cos they don’t want their IVF process to clash with the start of Ramadhan. This should only be an estimate ok. If you’re required to take more drugs, then do expect the process to be slightly longer than this. Also, the type of drugs used also differs. If you’re doing it at NUH then most probably you’ll get the same drugs as i do.

Loots from the baby fair. Will not be sharing all the nitty gritty stuff i got but rather, the notable purchases i made. Probably because it is something new to me, or because of the substantial savings from buying at the baby fair. I didn’t exactly buy everything i wanted because i heard there’ll be another fair by the same Organizers in July. It’s Ramadhan though so maybe penat gila nak ulang-alik but we shall see lah eh.

So i thought i would spend more if i go to the baby fair alone. But i spent more on sunday because Rusly was around to carry my purchases and also because he gave me the “go-ahead” look all the time. #myhusbandisthebest. HAHAHAHA

Babies Weekend!

So i was overwhelmed with babies and baby-related stuff the last weekend! Sent Nadya to my mom’s place on Friday, took a cab to Expo for the 1st Day of Baby Fair. Took the chance to drop by Robinson’s Travel Bazaar yang tak lah travel bazaar sangat actually cos they were selling some other stuff as well.

I was on a lookout for bigger luggage which we can use for our future trips. It has to be big, lightweight & of a striking colour so that it’s easier to spot!

10411995_10153238337553656_528434299788545637_n

Same colour as my Gucci Disco! Got this huge luggage from American Tourister for $119 which was a good deal! Grabbed it and brought it over to the baby fair so i can dump all my purchases in it. I even got myself some WMF pots! No idea where that came from! Lol

1st day of baby fair was quite civil actually. I stocked up on Mustela, bought the 1st Parklon Playmat in Size S but then decided to pre-order another Large size one for Nadya cos it was cheaper than the website and we love the playmat. WIll use the smaller sized one for her play area with fence & balls when she’s slightly bigger. I also pre-ordered the Organic Story Wet Wipes to collect it on Sunday! Bought her swimsuit and took the chance to ask questions on the Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers. I was contemplating on switching to cloth diapers cos it’s more environmentally and wallet friendly! So i took the chance to ask lotsa questions.

Then saturday came and we’re off to Farna’s place for our playdate and since we are going to the East side, we took the chance to drop by Eunos to send our fabrics to the tailor for our Baju Raya.

I love the fabrics i bought for this year raya! Soft colours and most importantly, i get to dress Nadya up as well!

What to Expect when you’re Baby-Fairing

Ok fine, Baby-fairing is not a real word and like all the stroller emails, i also have the same old “what to buy at the baby fair?” questions and because the baby fair is happening tomorrow, here’s some tips!

Here’s my previous post on the Baby Fair.

What i usually recommend getting at the baby fair:

Big & Bulky Items
Like Baby Cots / Mattress / Strollers
If you’re lucky, they’ll throw in free delivery or at least delivery is cheaper etc.

Wet Wipes
I also got myself 1 carton of Wet wipes cos it was cheaper. I used NUK previously and while it’s thick and soft, it’s not as watery as Huggies Wet Wipes. I love Huggies Wet Wipes. However, i wanna see how the Organic Story Wet Wipes fare cos they’re selling it at $29.90 for a carton of 10 packs and that’s cheap! If it’s as watery as Huggies, i’ll go get that. Else, i’ll get Huggies.  Just to share, the 21 packs of NUK Wet Wipes i got previously lasted me for about 3months? I still have about 3 packs left so u can stock up on wet wipes since you’ll need it anyway.

Swaddles
If you’re looking at Aden & Anais, they sell it quite cheap at the fair. So it’ll be a good time to buy. Don’t buy too many though. I bought 2 packs only. So total i have 6 swaddles. They’re pretty useful even though i no longer swaddle nadya, i sometimes use it as a changing pad / blanket / Mattress liner etc.

Diapers
i know some people would advise not to get diapers but i think it’s pretty handy. Just make sure u know the brand and the cutting you’ll be buying. Goon diaper’s cutting is slightly larger than the others so Nadya was able to use the newborn size till she was 6 weeks old. After that we switched to Size S. At 11 weeks, she is still using Size S cos of the generous cutting, However, i’ll be switching her to Size M once i’m done with the rest of Size S i have currently. The previous baby fair, Goon had this Buy 4 packs of Goon Diapers at $xx.xx promo and you can mix & match the sizes so I bought 2 packs of Newborn size and 2 packs of Size S of Goon Diapers. However, i would advise you to buy 1 Newborn Pack / 2 Small Size Pack & 1 Medium Size Pack. Typically babies under 3 months use about 8 – 10 diapers per day. At least mine do. Newborns use even more cos they poop all the time!

Goon / Bosomi / Merries and all those Japan / Korea diapers are actually the more expensive one in the market. They’re known to be soft and most of the time, your baby rarely get diaper rash etc from them. Popular bands like Pampers / Huggies / Drypers / Petpet etc don’t have the same softness as those Japanese / Korean brands so if you’re buying these brands, i don’t suggest you stock up on them in case it is not suitable for your baby. Afterall, they are easily available in supermarkets. I’m not saying the Japanese / Korean ones are superior and if you buy generic brands, your baby will get diaper rash because i know some babies are fine with it. The Japan / Korea ones are more expensive because they are soft. U’ll get what i mean when you’ve touched all the diaper samples.

Baby Toiletries
Again, if you’re looking at the drugstore brands like Pigeon / Kodomo / Pureen, you might not see the big price difference. But if you’re looking at Mustela / California Baby or other organic range etc, i recommend stocking them up at the fair. Nadya have sensitive skin & scalp, prone to those little red pimple dots & cradle cap. Noticed that it will flare up when i use the Pigeon All-in-one wash on her so i’ve stopped using that. So i switched to Mustela Foam Shampoo and she no longer have those pimple thing on her head. I also use California Baby Calendula Cream to treat her cradle cap and this thing is a god-sent! You must buy this because it’s multipurpose. Whenever Nadya scratch her face or she has random bumps on her face, i apply thinly and it’ll be gone the next day. You know babies are prone to those heat rash etc? This cream removed all the heat rash thing on her face by the next day. I bought the full size one but i wish i bought the travel size one instead cos a little goes a long way. I think this full size one will probably last me till nadya turns 2 agaknya! lol
For bathtime, i use Jo Lauren Foamy Wash because Nadya can’t use the Pigeon one and also cos the Jo Lauren one smells so good! I also use the Jo Lauren Oatmeal Bath Bag for her sometimes as a treat cos she seems to like it or rather i seem to like it. Nadya don’t know all these. Hahaha

Point is, you don’t necessarily have to use all the organic products segala. If your baby can use Pigeon / Kodomo etc, then let them use it. I tried but seems that Nadya’s skin is a bit sensitive. I brought the Kodomo Travel kit to KL cos that was the only travel bath kit i had. She came back with spots on her body. So i’m never using these again. But if you’re looking at getting organic / sulphate free baby bath products, do get it at the fair! It’s so so much cheaper!

Baby Clothes
If you’re not a fan of online shopping, they sell some really cute Carters clothings for quite cheap! You just have to keep a lookout & compare cos there are various booths that do this. Do refrain from getting too much long sleeved rompers. Babies hate them! Buy plenty of those short sleeved ones. Even better if you can find those sleeveless one. Babies hate having to put their arms through long sleeves. They’ll cry bloody murder and you’ll get all flustered. #truestory.

Baby Gadgets
If you’re looking at buying a baby swing / rocker, buy it at the fair. It is cheaper and they’ll throw in free gifts. I got my Ingenuity Baby Swing and received a Playard for free! Don’t need to buy too expensive ones or yang canggih gila because i think they’ll outgrow it by the time they’re 6mths? If you’re lucky.

Nursing Bras
If you have normal sized boobs, good for you. Just buy your nursing bras at Qoo10. But if you’re a D cup and above, i feel you. It is hard to find a comfortable maternity / nursing bra and after so many stupid purchases, i only like the Annee Matthew Nursing bra. It is really comfortable, light and absorbs sweat. It is $39.90 on their website but they’re selling it at 2 for $39.90 at the fair. At least that’s what i got during the preorder. You can try your luck at the fair. It is really comfortable and cheaper than the Mark & Spencers one. Trust me.

Handkerchiefs
You’ll need lots of them. So buy them at the fair! Really, you need lots of handkerchiefs! Find those micro-fibre ones cos they absorb milk spit-outs better than those thin thin ones! I personally like the Mothercare ones but they are quite costly so the next best thing is from Spring Maternity, who’ll be at the fair.

Baby Beddings
If you’re getting a cot, buy baby beddings at the fair as well. Baby beddings are not cheap ok! It can come up to $100++. But i saw a few that were going at $40 – $50 at the previous fair so save save a bit lah. Oh, i’m talking about the complete baby beddings with bumpers etc. If you can, buy the Babysafe Infant Pillow. Think they’re having a good bundle promo. Nadya’s head shape is quite nice cos of the pillow. LOL

Baby Bottles / Sterilizer
Don’t buy too many bottles unless you are pretty sure you’ll be bottle feeding. Just buy maximum 2 first because sometimes your babies might not take a liking to the teats and you might have to do one big search, buying all the bottles in the market until u find one that she likes. You’ll need a sterilizer if you’ll be using bottles / expressing milk. Else, if you have time to boil your bottles, then don’t bother getting a sterilizer. I didn’t buy any but got one as a gift so i use lah. Lol
Don’t bother buying a bottle warmer. They’re pretty useless.

Tips for surviving the Baby Fair:

  1. Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking around two big halls. Jangan jadi diva pakai kasut tinggi. You’ll regret it.
  2. Bring a luggage or a trolley. You’ll thank me for this.
  3. Wear light clothes. Chiffon would be the best. It’ll get stuffy at certain popular booth and some popular booths, the payment queues are damn terrible. Sometimes up to 2 hours long!
  4. Do your research. Not everything is cheaper at the fair. Sometimes, you can get it cheaper online like Agapebabies , Qoo10 etc.
  5. Bring your ATM Card and plenty of cash. Sometimes they have separate queues for Cash & Card Payments. The cash payment queues are always shorter.

I only go to the Baby Market Fair cos i feel they have the best deal. Nadya will be turning 3 months old next week and the next fair by them will be in October. By then, she’ll be 9 months old? For this fair, i’ll be stocking up on diapers and her toiletries mainly. But i’m also on the lookout for:

  1. Playmat (particularly the Parklon brand)
  2. Swimwear & Swim Diapers (cos Nadya will be starting her swim classes in May!)
  3. High Chair (Hopefully she can sit on it by the time she’s 6 months pls!)
  4. Cloth Books (Nadya love her current one so i gotta buy more before she gets bored of this one!)
  5. Food Processor (i’m torn between the Little Bean one or the Beaba one.)

The Little Bean Food processor is only $60 while the Beaba one is about $200. There’s a stark difference in price. I like the Beaba one better but i’m not sure if we will use it more than 3 months since Nadya will gradually start on semi solids so we shall see! Padahal anak aku baru tiga bulan dah pikir pasal makan. Dasar anak beranak pelahap.

With that, happy shopping! Go early if you can cos some things run out pretty quickly! If you’re lucky, they’ll stock up.

Nadya Raessa

Everyday we’re Yoyo-ing!

It’s funny how things have changed for this blog! 3 years ago, i keep receiving emails asking for recommendations on wedding matters. Actually i’ve stopped replying to such emails already because i’ve moved on from weddings because that’s just what BTBs Basi should do. There is so much more to talk about than weddings u know?

And then when i was TTC-ing a few of you emailed to ask for tips etc. Yang this one i still layan because it’s something very very dear to me and it’s something i’m still looking forward to in years to come! So yes, you’re always welcome to email me and share with me your TTC Journey!

Then recently, i keep getting emails on hospital reviews, gynae reviews and most commonly the stroller review! I didn’t have time to reply to any cos i was busy with Nadya and also cos i figure i should use the stroller few times for me to give a substantial review lah kan.

Yoyo

Until this came in today and i figure since the Baby Fair is this weekend, i should just hurry up with the review so u can consider if you wanna get the stroller or not.

1_13

Review on the Babyzen Yoyo. I bought the 0+ & 6+ month bundle from the baby fair.
Before i start on the review, do note that i am not a hardcore stroller user and i switch between using the stroller and babywearing. This is my personal opinion on the stroller.

If i can describe it in 3 words, it is light, compact and awesome.
I have no regrets buying this stroller. I’ve brought Nadya out with the stroller, took a cab and we went out shopping all by myself. I manage to do all that while carrying Nadya in one arm and folding the stroller with the other hand. Before i do that, i practised by holding a diaper bag in one arm and tried folding the stroller using the other available hand. It is do-able and not that hard because all u need is to flip the stroller.

I also brought the stroller to KL and it is travel-friendly because of the size. We intend to bring it to our Penang trip this May cos it’ll be her 1st flight out and hopefully it’ll be useful for flight trips as well.

I managed to psycho 2 of my friends to buy this stroller cos they saw how handy and light it was. I even had one stranger coming up to me to ask the model of the stroller because to her, it looks light but sturdy and indeed it is.

I also love how compact it is when folded. Plus point because it can go up the airplane cabin baggage area. Size-wise, it’s perfect for Nadya. She is comfortable with the stroller, does not find it hot and does not resist or cry when we put her in the stroller.

The only thing i dislike is the half canopy. I wish it was a full canopy so i don’t have to cover it with a swaddle when the sun is too bright. But other than that, i can find no fault with the stroller.

Have i told you it’s light? It’s 6kg and although u can feel the weight, please imagine how a 10kg stroller feels like and i don’t think you can fold a stroller single-handedly with a baby in your arms.

My advise in getting a stroller, start your survey early. I bought the stroller even when Nadya is not out yet and i put her in the stroller when she was a week old just to get her used to it. Alhamdulillah she is ok with it. If you intend to use a stroller, start them early. It’ll be easier for you later.

How to know if you can handle a stroller on your own? When you do your stroller survey, try fold and unfold the stroller using one hand. Cos honestly that’s what you’ll be doing all the time especially if you intend to go out alone with baby. Cos there’s no way i’ll pass my baby to a random stranger and get them to hold her while i settle the stroller.

If you can handle the stroller alone with one hand, then put it in your KIV List. It does not have to be necessarily the Yoyo. Can be any other stroller. As long as you can manage it on your own cos we all have different level of strength. I honestly cannot handle anything more than 7kg on my own.

If you ask me if i would recommend the stroller, i say yes of course.
it might not be the cheapest lightweight stroller but it is of good quality and safe for my baby.

Oh we’re tripping!

We just got back from our KL trip safe & sound! And by that i mean, i do not have any suicide thoughts nor did i have this urge to leave my daughter behind in KL and let her jadi orang mesia yang tengah sibuk merungut pasal GST. LOL
Honestly, i was sceptical about bringing her along. Would she be fussy and crying all the time and then i get flustered etc. Worst, what if tiba2 ada orang kidnap anak aku without me realising it. Serious aku fikir bukan2. I think too much and i need to stop this perangai tak senonoh.

Nadya proved me wrong! She was quiet throughout the entire car ride. Only waking up for feeds, and then tido balik. Serious, member penat macam dia pulak yang drive berjam-jam. But itu jugak bermakna i can sleep through the car ride. Yes, i make a very bad roadtrip partner cos i always sleep during car rides. So yes the car ride was surprisingly sane for all of us!

In fact, i have to pat Nadya’s back. She was a really fuss free travel partner and you know what, i think babies below 3 months are ideal for short trips like this (if you’re scared of bringing them on board a plane) cos they sleep all the time! They don’t move around that much! So yes, if you’re expecting and you think u need a short trip after your confinement, go ahead! Akak kasi seal of approval! It’s really easy to bring them travelling at this age. But the packing of the bag tu ada sikit tak senonoh. Pergi for a weekend tapi pack macam pergi satu minggu. No more light packing! Sigh.

We left our house at 6.00am to avoid the jam. Itu pun jam jugak. Lol
I think part of the reason why Nadya so syiok tido was because she was strapped on me all the time. We didn’t have space to put in a car seat so i use the ring sling in the car instead and it worked! Although she drooled all over my top. Selamat i was smart enough to just wear a plain black cotton top. We used the ring sling in the car and when we’re walking at carparks etc. Once we’re in the shopping mall or while eating, we switched to the stroller. Either way, she likes them both, thankfully!

The Big Bag Theory

I got myself another diaper bag. fml.

I know i have an obsession with bags but never thought i’ll feel the same about diaper bags. During my pregnancy i thought i’ll just need one diaper bag and be contented. I also found diaper bags to be boring. But i got sucked into a whole new world and now i’m obsessed.

My 1st Diaper bag is the Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy BackPack which looks like this.
It’s costly & bulky. But you know it is of a good quality. I love this bag but it’s heavy and bulky on it’s own so i only use this if we are going out with Rusly cos that means i can bring the stroller out and don’t need to lug this all around on my own.

My 2nd diaper bag is a free gift from getting the Babyzen Yoyo Stroller. At first i thought it was too big but after few uses, i started to like it more than my 1st diaper bag! It was lightweight and very spacious. Perfect if we are out for the whole day and also if we need to leave Nadya at my mom’s place cos i can put in lotsa stuff in there. But again, not practical to bring such a big bag when i go out alone with Nadya. Especially if i babywear.

So i started searching for a lightweight bag that will fit Nadya’s necessities and small enough for me to carry when i baywear her and bring her out alone. That’s where the new bag comes in. It fits all my criteria perfectly that i’m tempted to go get another design!

2015-03-26 14.06.19

Got myself the Jujube Hobobe Legacy Collection. I couldn’t decide which print i like the most but finally settled on The Admiral. Bought it from Maternity Exchange and it was the last piece for this model! Phewww
